Ductile iron valves are widely used in various working conditions in the chemical industry due to their unique material properties and economy.
Suitable media
Non-strongly corrosive media: suitable for water, steam, oil, inert gas, weak acid and weak alkali (such as sulfuric acid with low concentration, sodium hydroxide solution, etc.).
Limitations: Not suitable for strongly corrosive media (such as concentrated hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, high-temperature concentrated alkali) or highly oxidizing environments (such as chlorine wet environment). In this case, stainless steel, fluorine-lined valves or special alloy valves are required.
Typical chemical application conditions
- Water treatment system: opening, closing and regulation of cooling water and circulating water pipelines.
- Steam system: low-pressure steam pipelines (pay attention to the upper temperature limit, usually ≤350℃).
- Gas transportation: nitrogen, compressed air and other inert gas pipelines.
- Weakly corrosive liquids: such as diluted acid/alkali solutions (concentration and temperature range need to be confirmed).
- Sewage treatment: neutral or weakly corrosive wastewater pipelines.
Performance advantages
Pressure and impact resistance: Ductile iron has higher tensile strength than ordinary cast iron and is suitable for medium and high pressure conditions (PN16-PN25 is common).
Cost-effectiveness: The price is lower than that of stainless steel valves and is suitable for non-demanding conditions with limited budgets.
Abrasion resistance: Suitable for media containing particulate matter (such as sewage), better than ordinary cast iron.
Casting flexibility: Complex structure valves (such as large-diameter gate valves and butterfly valves) can be manufactured.
Common valve types
- Ball valve: quick opening and closing, good sealing (soft seal or metal seal).
- Gate valve: full-bore design, suitable for large-diameter pipelines.
- Butterfly valve: light and low-cost, suitable for low-pressure and large-flow control.
- Check valve: prevents medium backflow, commonly used lift type or swing type.
Ductile iron valves are suitable for medium and low pressure, non-corrosive environments in the chemical industry, and occupy a certain market with their high strength and low cost. When selecting a valve, it is necessary to comprehensively evaluate the medium characteristics, operating parameters (pressure/temperature) and life requirements.
